About Talking Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is often invisible, but its impact is anything but.

Talking Hearing Loss exists to give voice to the lived experience of hearing loss, to challenge stigma, and to show that life with hearing loss can still be full, meaningful, and connected.

This blog is written for people living with hearing loss, for the families and friends who support them, and for professionals who want to better understand what everyday listening truly involves.

My Story

I’ve lived with hearing loss for most of my life.

What began as mild hearing loss in my teenage years gradually progressed to severe–profound loss by adulthood. Along the way, I experienced the quiet frustrations that many people with hearing loss know well, missing parts of conversations, withdrawing from noisy environments, and feeling the constant mental effort it takes just to keep up.

In 2017, after more than two decades of deafness in one ear, I received a cochlear implant. That moment marked a turning point, not just in how I heard the world, but in how I understood my own journey.

The implant didn’t “fix” everything, but it opened doors: access to sound I hadn’t heard in years, a renewed relationship with music, and a deeper appreciation of how adaptable the human brain, and spirit, can be.

Why I write

Talking Hearing Loss was created to break the silence that often surrounds hearing loss.

Too often, hearing loss is reduced to devices and decibels. What’s missing from that conversation is the emotional, social, and psychological side, the listening fatigue, the isolation, the resilience, and the quiet strength it takes to navigate a world that isn’t always hearing-friendly.

Through personal stories, practical insights, and plain-language explanations, this blog aims to:

  • Normalise conversations about hearing loss
  • Reduce stigma and misconceptions
  • Help people feel less alone in their experiences
  • Offer practical strategies for everyday life

Professional Perspective

Alongside my lived experience, I work in hearing healthcare as an audiometrist.

This dual perspective, as both a professional and someone with hearing loss, shapes everything I write. It allows me to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and real-world experience, translating technical concepts into language that makes sense in daily life.

I believe the most effective hearing care happens when expertise is paired with empathy.
