New smartphone app could diagnose ear infections

An app can diagnose ear infections in children by emitting a soft chirp and listening to the way the sound reflects back. To work, all it requires is a smartphone and a funnel made from folded paper.

The app, developed by Justin Chan at the University of Seattle and colleagues, plays a continuous 150-millisecond sound through the paper funnel, which is placed near the ear canal.
